Shop small rugsThe everyday living-room size. With a three-seater sofa, the front legs rest on the rug and the coffee table sits in the middle.
Shop medium rugsFor open-plan lounges and corner sofas. The whole seating group sits on the rug, which makes the room feel finished and anchored.
Shop large rugsUnder a table for six. Chairs stay on the rug even when they are pulled out, so nothing catches on the edge.
Shop dining rugsFor hallways, kitchens and beside the bed. Leave 10 to 15 cm of floor showing on each side.
Shop runnersThe right size makes all the difference. Here's how to choose.
| Size | Best for |
|---|---|
| 80 x 120 cm | Entries, bedsides, reading corners, under a desk chair |
| 120 x 160 cm | Small bedrooms, kids' rooms, studies, apartments |
| 140 x 200 cm | Bedrooms, small lounges, in front of a two-seater sofa |
| 160 x 230 cm | Most living rooms with a three-seater sofa, queen bedrooms |
| 200 x 300 cm | Large or open-plan living rooms, dining tables for 6–8 |
| Runners | Hallways, kitchens, beside the bed (60–80 cm wide, 200–400 cm long) |
Aim for a rug that sits under at least the front legs of your sofa and armchairs. This visually connects the furniture and makes the room feel bigger. For a three-seater sofa, 160 x 230 cm is the most common choice; for an L-shaped sofa or open-plan space, choose 200 x 300 cm.
Place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends at least 50 cm on each side. For a queen bed, choose 160 x 230 cm; for a king bed, 200 x 300 cm. Prefer a lighter look? Use a pair of 80 x 120 cm rugs, one on each side.
Allow about 60 cm of rug beyond the table on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A 200 x 300 cm rug suits most six-seat tables.
Leave 10–15 cm of floor visible on each side of the runner, and stop about 30 cm short of each end of the hallway.
Before you order, mark the size on the floor with masking tape and live with it for a day. You'll know straight away if it's right.
